As a business major with a love for fashion, I initially had no idea how many different career paths existed within the industry. When I met with my career advisor, who had a background in retail and buying, I realized there was no program, organization, or community at KU that connected students interested in fashion with the business side of the industry. That conversation sparked the idea to create one myself.

In Spring of 2022, I had officially founded the University of Kansas’s first fashion and business organization with the goal of creating a community where students could explore fashion as both a passion and a career. Fashion opportunities often felt synonymous with major cities like New York or Los Angeles, and I wanted students in Lawrence to see that they didn’t have to be in a major fashion capital to find meaningful opportunities, build relationships, and pursue a career in the industry.

A major part of my vision was connecting students beyond campus; partnering with local boutiques and small businesses in Lawrence while also creating relationships within the broader Kansas City fashion community. I wanted students to have opportunities to learn from people in the industry, gain real-world experience, and begin building a professional network before graduation.

What started with a small group of students grew into a community that I dedicated the rest of my time at KU to building. Seeing the organization continue to grow beyond my graduation in 2024 through fashion shows, student publications, events, and countless new members has been incredibly rewarding. I’m proud that what began as an idea to fill a gap on campus has grown into a lasting community that makes a career in fashion feel more accessible to KU students.

I started this club at KU because I wanted to create a space for people who shared my love for fashion. At the time, we noticed a gap in the club community, and Alexis and I wanted to create a place where that passion could be celebrated, explored, and shared with others. Fashion has always been about more than just clothes; it’s about creativity, connection, and finding your people. I hope this can be a space that continues to foster a special sense of community and bring people together for many years to come.
